Hey everyone, I think you should check out the article posted above. It makes you consider the internet and the benefits of technology in a new way. Once you do check it out let me know what you think about Google’s argument that “Ambiguity is not an opening for insight but a bug to be fixed. The human brain is just an outdated computer that needs a faster processor and a bigger hard drive” (as cited in Carr). What were some of your reactions to this idea and the others mentioned in the article? Do you think Google is right?

The internet has dramatically improved the way that students, faculty and researchers have been able to do their work and reach a conclusion about a certain topic. The author in the the article mentions how he once was able to read books for hours and was able to concentrate and now he has trouble doing that claiming that the internet is the reason for this. While this is an interesting point I would have to bed to differ with him, Before the invention of the internet one would have to spend countless hours in the library to find the resources that the individual needed to write his or her research. Hence one can make the argument that a library and the internet is one in the same, because hold a collection of materials that allow one to be able to find the resources necessary to do one’s work.
While thinking about this I remember as a freshman in college only checking out books from the library once for work I was doing on the topic of Teachers having Tenure in schools. Now I make this argument on the basis that the library housed all of the materials that I needed to make this argument in the form of books and past magazine articles. Think back to when you were working on a research paper during your secondary or college education. Did you ever read a whole book that you were considering using to prove or disprove a point? The answer for most is no absolutely not. While we would like to think that we were more studious before the internet and actually read more books then we do now. Which may be true the point is that we as a society weren’t reading the whole book we would only read the chapter or chapters that we needed to include in our research topic. Isn’t that the same thing that the Internet has allowed us to accomplish. The only difference is that we have access to a greater wealth of knowledge that is out there. The more information we find about a topic, the more points we can find, which gives us a stronger argument to prove or disprove a theory that is accepted by the general public as a whole.
In conclusion, while the author has a valid point that the Internet and Google in his concern for the use of the internet but Google is correct in the argument that our brains are an outdated computer that needs a faster processor. By using the internet we are able to research, write, and blog about our thoughts on certain issues. By being able to do this as a society we have proven the argument that Google has stated in the article above that the brain is nothing more than an outdated computer that has to speed up.
