A Short Learning Story

As Peruvian immigrant in the United States, I had to look for ways to learn English. I had taken English classes in my country but not enough to speak the language perfectly. So when I arrived in Connecticut, I felt deaf and mute. Deaf because I could not understand any of the words that people were saying to me. And mute because I was too shy to speak the little English that I had learned before. Almost four years after that day, I am sitting down in this chair, sharing my experience with you and hoping that you would learn something from it.

In my desperate attempt to learn English as fast as I could, I came out with a great idea. Why not have fun and learn at the same time? So, I did. I began to listen to music in English, in the radio or at home. However, the radio was more useful because it helped me to practice listening to people. Then and against my will, I started to watch TV programs in English. Finally, I decided to read all my favorite books again but this time in English. All of these things were helpful, but there was a problem: I was not practicing! Suddenly, a bell rang on my head. If I was in the United States and I had thousands of English speakers around me, Why not try to talk to them? So, I did. And it was not an easy job. I had to listen to tons of “Can you repeat that again?” but that did not stop me from my goal. As a matter of fact, I keep listening that phrase but not so often. After four years, I came to realize that my efforts to learn English were worth it.

Can you relate my story to your own life? I bet you can! Life is a constant learning experience, we never stop learning. That is why we need to look for creative ways to learn; it does not matter if it is something easy or difficult.

So, these are my tips for you to learn Spanish:
• Listen to Spanish music: A radio station that would be nice for you would be 1230 AM, they have good music.
• Watch TV in Spanish: Look for Univision and Telemundo in your TV.

• Meet new people: You can go to study abroad. But if you cannot go, Hartford is the
perfect place to find Spanish speakers to talk to.
• And my best tip to give you is: Do not be shy. Feel free to talk and practice because
this is the only way you can learn.
